CST 300 - Week 5

Part 1: Support and Comments on Teammates' Goals

Part 2: Possible Capstone Ideas

Some ideas for capstone that I have are in the area of education with a focus on classroom management and video game design.

My first idea is to create a seating chart generator app for teachers to use in their classrooms. As a teacher, creating a seating chart can be a challenge. Whether you have a challenging class or are just looking to mix seats up, this app will help create the perfect seating chart. The app will give the teacher a variety of options to create a seating chart: individual, partner, or grouping (3 or more). The teacher can create a seating chart or groupings based on current grade in class, on an assignment, IEP requirements, or behavioral issues.

My second idea is to create a school environment application or website. With technology in the classroom becoming more and more popular, students are having to manage their own apps, homework assignments, and deadlines. This app can be used school-wide and will have an interface for each class where notes and assignments can be accessed. It will also have a calendar that will keep all student deadlines and test dates. In addition, each class will have a list of commonly used apps/websites embedded in the class interface for easy access.

My third idea is to create a video game that helps students learn math vocabulary and math skills. The game would be an action-based game where the user is a knight fighting different monsters. The fight would take place with turn-based combat. In order to attack the monster, the user must answer a math question at a specified level. If the user answers correctly, the knight attacks the monster. If the response is quick enough, the damage to the monster can be doubled. If the user answers incorrectly, the monster successfully attacks the user. Each level would be about a specific math subject in a specific grade level. The last level of a topic will be a review of the previous material. Students can keep going until they reach their desired grade level.

Part 3: Weekly Reflection

This week, we had readings regarding fallacies in arguments. It was interesting to see what types of fallacies existed and how they could be used to weaken arguments. It was a great read to prepare for our ethics paper. In addition to our reading, we also learned about conflict identification and had practice with identifying the correct actions dependent on certain situations where various levels of relationships may exist (friendships, coworkers, acquaintances, etc).

This week, we also had a discussion about internships and graduate programs. I plan on applying for internships. My only concern is having time to work them to completion as I teach from August to June, and most internships are from May to August. I hope to apply for them in hopes that they will work with my schedule. As for graduate programs, I am looking into attending Stanford University as they have an online MS program in Computer Science. They have two focuses that I am interested in: Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity. I am not sure what route I would like to take, and I hope that the internships and classes we take during our program will help me decide.
